If you’ve ever wandered into Mr. Fetterly’s classroom in the high school wing of our building you’ve discovered that he’s a man of quotes. World leaders, thinkers and famous poets words end up on the whiteboard behind Mr. Fetterly’s desk. Whether to spark thought, discussion, or emotion - it is all a part of helping students engage in not only our history but to also critically think about the world in which they are preparing to enter.
Peter Fetterly feels privileged to be a part of establishing Cornerstone Christian Academy back in 1996. This school, and their family’s life with this school, has been their passion. Peter and his wife Mary’s children, Brett and Emily, started school at CCA in 1996. Emily was in the very first CCA kindergarten! She attended all 13 years and graduated in 2009 two years after her brother Brett graduated in 2007. Throughout the years, Pete and Mary have served in various volunteer roles within our school. Pete, who has practiced law for the past 28 years has fond memories of being a guest lecturer in Mr. Schidler’s political science class, coming in to the 9th grade study of To Kill a Mockingbird and giving his legal perspective on the trial. He also enjoyed acting as “Cookie” on the CCA mission trips to Mexico.
Years after his own children graduated, God clearly paved a path for Peter to come on staff as a full time teacher at CCA, bringing his legal practice and passion into the classroom. When asked why he’s teaching in this second season of life, he related feeling that God had not only engineered it, but that He had also given him a skill set that lends itself to young people. With his growing passion to be in the classroom with our students, he’s even surprised himself with how much he really likes it! For Mr. Fetterly, teaching 8-12th grade students is much more about relationships than it is about the subject matter he teaches (which he also loves by the way). He loves being able to take a text and bring it to life in a way that challenges students to think and react in personal ways.
Mr. Fetterly’s passions are not just CCA, law and teaching, but also connecting people in relationship. Peter loves his family well, and regularly looks to create opportunities for connection and relationship….often around food. Peter is a BBQ chef, a fly fisherman, a sailor at heart, and a man who loves to eat good cuts of meat. He uses all of his time, talents and resources to strengthen and encourage the people around him, and impact the students to be educated and inspired citizens as they graduate from CCA. For this lawyer turned teacher, his favorite quote shouldn’t surprise us. “Hold it Loosely”... for in this ever changing world in which our possessions, talents and even relationships all vie for preeminence, our path, our passions, and our life story ultimately belongs to God…our ROCK and our SALVATION.
